North Star Nursery has been a staple of the Mendocino Coastal Community since 1993. The process of understanding how different people read and interact with different spaces is a core interest that drives everything we offer, both in our store and in our physical garden.
Every day we work to create an environment that supports and inspires gardeners to keep growing and transforming their spaces into beautiful experiences for them to enjoy. Our knowledgeable staff is here to ensure that any questions you may have are answered, and every visit to our nursery leaves you even more excited about your vision for your home and garden.

John Vitale, Owner
John first began working in nurseries at the age of fourteen. He has fond memories of riding his bike to work with a cart in tow and loading it up with plants to take home at the end of each shift. In his twenties, he worked with William Sonoma and Pottery Barn, where he worked for five and a half years, as a store manager and as a designer. His store won best of the district for three years in a row.
His love for plants persisted, so he combined his skills and background in retail merchandising with his interest in plants, landscape design, and the process of creating aesthetically resonant natural spaces.
John purchased North Star Nursery in 2010. In 2012, he began propagating plants. There is something magical and beautiful about putting either a seed, a cutting, or a baby plant into the ground, and watching it become a shrub or a tree. There is something special about being able to directly affect the landscape of our unique coastal environment.

Our team of knowledgeable gardeners takes great care with both the plants and people who come to our nursery to visit them. If you have any questions during your visit, we love to talk about gardening and home decor. Just ask!

We love dogs here at North Star Nursery. Many members of our staff bring their fluffy friends to work. You are also welcome to bring your best canine friend, as long he or she plays well with others! 🐶
